Donald Trump claimed 422,000 people gathered on the National Mall before lightning forced a mass evacuation, then said he personally overruled the cancellation and welcomed at least 150,000 back, on a Truth Social post on July 5, 2026 at 2:29 PM EST.

Here is the full post on [truthsocial]: “The Crowd at 7:05 in the evening was 422,000 people! All were forced to leave because of the weather, the event was cancelled, and everyone was gone because of lightning. When I heard that it was cancelled, I immediately overturned that decision, and waited a while for people to come back. Incredibly, at least 150,000 people returned, and it was an even more spectacular evening than it would have been as normalized! It showed work under pressure. Congratulations to the Secret Service and Law Enforcement on being able to get so many people back into the Arena in such rapid fashion! It was an amazing evening made even more spectacular by the fact that, immediately after the Great Fireworks ended, the rains came down, full blast! Trump”

Trump described an outdoor gathering on the National Mall that was interrupted by severe weather, including lightning, which prompted organizers to cancel the event and clear attendees from the area. Trump said he overturned that cancellation decision and waited for the crowd to reassemble. He praised the Secret Service and law enforcement for moving large numbers of people back into the venue quickly.

The post included a photograph taken from an elevated vantage point showing the Jefferson Memorial, the Tidal Basin and large crowds spread across multiple viewing areas on the National Mall. Bleacher seating, staging structures, tents and a large LED screen displaying an American flag were visible, consistent with a major organized public event. The sky appeared overcast and hazy, matching the weather disruption Trump described. The image alone cannot verify the specific attendance figures Trump cited, though it does show a substantial gathering (see truthsocial).

Trump credited the evening’s drama with demonstrating leadership under pressure and called the fireworks display “great.” He noted that rain arrived immediately after the fireworks concluded, adding to what he characterized as a dramatic and memorable night.

No independent crowd-size estimates were immediately available to confirm or dispute the 422,000 and 150,000 figures Trump cited. Crowd-size claims for National Mall events have historically been a subject of debate, with official estimates often differing from figures offered by event organizers or political figures.
