The document recounts a March 2020 meeting in which the NSA deputy director objected to releasing the assessment “as-is at this time.” He raised no concern about flawed intelligence and instead feared the report would brand the agency as part of the “deep state” according to justthenews. The memo states that the official wanted to protect the NSA’s ability to remain “nonpartisan, objective, speaking truth to power” according to justthenews.
The report had been proposed for release in December 2018 and concerned foreign targeting of the United States that began in 2014, including activity related to the 2016 election according to justthenews.
