Themba Zwane received a three-match suspension after being shown a red card in their opening Group A fixture at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Themba Zwane, also known as Mshishi, is a South African professional soccer player who plays as an attacking midfielder for Premier Soccer League club Mamelodi Sundowns and the South Africa national team.

Themba debuted for South Africa on 14 October 2014 in a 1-1 draw with Congo.

Since then, he has represented South Africa with incredible performances, making him one of Bafana Bafana’s most experienced midfielders with over 50 international appearances.

However, in the 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, he suffered a major setback. FIFA handed him a three-match suspension following his red card in South Africa’s opening match against Mexico.

Zwane, who came in as a substitute, was sent off in the 84th minute at Azteca Stadium after a VAR review ruled he had struck Mexico’s Roberto Alvarado in the face.

The FIFA disciplinary committee reviewed the incident and classified it as serious foul play, extending one-match suspension to three matches.

Zwane  Themba had only played for 20 minutes before he was shown a straight red card by Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio following a VAR review,

South Africa’s coach, Hugo Broos, publicly criticized the decision, claiming that the punishment was too harsh and that they would appeal the extended suspension.

He also questioned FIFA’s consistency in disciplinary matters, pointing out why Argentina superstar Lionel Messi received different treatment during the opening match against Algeria despite stamping a player’s leg.

The dismissal of one of South Africa’s most experienced players came as a major blow as the team tries to recover from a 2-0 defeat to Mexico.

Zwane will miss South Africa’s remaining Group A matches against Czechia and South Korea.

If the suspension is appealed successfully, Zwane will be allowed to feature again should South Africa proceed beyond the group stage.

South Africa had two players sent off in the match against Mexico, Sphephelo Sithole also received a red card, leaving the team with only nine men on the pitch.

According to FIFA, the suspension was imposed for serious foul play under Article 14 of the FIFA disciplinary code.

“I don't think the action they took was fair. The three-match suspension is too harsh and the team may consider appealing it. The ban means Zwane will miss the remaining matches of the group stage, which is a big setback for the team given his importance in midfield," said Hugo during an interview with Zenger News on June 20,2026.”
