— Leaders of the world’s most advanced economies gathered in France this week for the annual G7 Summit, aiming to tackle pressing global challenges ranging from the war in Ukraine and economic instability, to tensions in the Middle East, especially in Iran. However, much of the attention shifted to President Donald Trump after he made a striking declaration during discussions, telling fellow leaders, “I’m the boss.”

The remark came amid high-level talks on coordinated responses to Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine and the economic consequences of rising oil prices linked to tensions involving Iran. Trump’s statement was widely interpreted as a reflection of his direct and forceful leadership style, one that prioritizes national interests and decisive action.

Reports from the summit also noted that Trump arrived late to at least one key session, further fueling discussion about his approach to diplomatic norms. While some observers viewed his conduct as disruptive, others saw it as consistent with a strategy that emphasizes leverage and dominance in negotiations.

Despite the controversy surrounding his tone, Trump remained actively engaged in bilateral meetings throughout the summit. Notably, he held discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, signalling a willingness to align more closely with allies in supporting Ukraine. He also met with other world leaders to address trade, security, and energy concerns.

The summit itself was dominated by complex issues, including efforts to stabilize global markets, reduce dependence on China for critical minerals, and explore potential diplomatic solutions to ongoing conflicts. Trump, however, added a layer of political drama, underscoring the challenges of balancing strong leadership with multilateral cooperation.

Reactions among G7 partners were mixed. Some officials privately expressed unease that such language could strain relationships at a time when unity is essential. Others suggested that Trump’s assertiveness might strengthen negotiating positions in certain areas.

“Well, it's very simple. The United States is leading again. We weren't leading before. Now we are. I have great relationships with the leaders, but they respect strength. When America is strong, the world is strong, and that's what I'm showing I was showing," said President Trump at the G7 Summit press conference.”

As the summit concluded, it was clear that while substantive progress was made on several fronts, Trump’s “I’m the boss” comment would remain one of the most memorable takeaways, a symbol of both his leadership approach and the broader tensions shaping international diplomacy today.
