Trump Amplifies Ethics Group’s Call to Probe Sen. Whitehouse Over Wife’s Group

Trump highlights a watchdog complaint alleging the Rhode Island senator steered nearly $7 million in federal funds to Ocean Conservancy, which employs his wife.

WASHINGTON D.C. — Donald Trump amplified a demand for a Senate ethics investigation into Sheldon Whitehouse, the Rhode Island Democrat accused of steering federal money to an environmental group that employs his wife.

The complaint, filed by the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust, alleges Whitehouse advocated and voted for legislation that funneled nearly $7 million to Ocean Conservancy in the fall of 2024, according to factdc. His wife, Sandra Whitehouse, has worked for the advocacy group since 2008.

“Senator Whitehouse advocated and voted for legislation that led to $6.9 million of taxpayer funds being paid to an organization that his wife works for and receives an income from,” said Kendra Arnold, executive director of the watchdog, in the group’s statement.

The watchdog filed its complaint with the Senate Select Committee on Ethics, asking it to investigate and take appropriate action, according to factdc. Trump elevated the matter to his followers by mentioning the source (see factdc).

Ocean Conservancy has received nineteen government grants worth roughly $14.2 million since 2008, according to factdc. Nearly half of that total came in the fall of 2024, including a $5.2 million grant in September 2024 and a $1.7 million grant in December 2024, according to factdc. The watchdog says Whitehouse directly supported and voted for the legislation that produced those grants.

Senate Ethics Rules prohibit senators from taking official action when they have a conflict of interest, according to factdc. The rules bar senators from using official action to obtain or appear to obtain a financial benefit, whether the benefit reaches the senator directly or a spouse. The watchdog contends Whitehouse appears to have violated those rules through what it called a circular relationship between the senator and a group that lobbies and pays his wife a salary.

The stakes fall on Whitehouse, a leading Senate voice on climate and ocean policy, whose standing could suffer if the ethics panel acts. The watchdog describes itself as a nonpartisan organization promoting accountability, ethics, and transparency in government, according to factdc.

The Senate Select Committee on Ethics is the next body positioned to weigh the request, according to factdc. A date for any decision has not been announced.
