Donald Trump shared a news report reiterating that preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon remains his top objective in the ongoing war between Washington and Tehran.

The link Trump shared carried the headline of a Just the News article on the same subject by mentioning the source (see justthenews). Trump has sought a concession from Iran to never possess a nuclear weapon, though Tehran has been unwilling to agree to those terms despite military pressure from Washington according to justthenews.

Last year, the U.S. launched a series of strikes on Iran, dubbed “Operation Midnight Hammer,” aimed at eliminating the country’s nuclear program according to justthenews. Trump declared it a success afterward and said Iran’s nuclear program had been destroyed. The conflict renewed in February, with joint U.S.-Israeli strikes that killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei according to justthenews. The war fell into a nominal ceasefire for weeks, but negotiations broke down and fighting resumed.

Trump said in August that newly planned talks between Washington and Tehran were the “last chance” for Iran to forge a deal and avoid an escalation of U.S. strikes according to pbs. He said he expected negotiations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for the global oil trade, and to chart a path on Iran’s nuclear program. “The first phase is the opening of the straits. The second phase will be the denuclearization,” Trump said according to pbs.

Trump said he held off on ordering new massive strikes at the urging of Gulf allies Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, along with a request from unnamed Iranian officials according to pbs. He told reporters he wanted to give Tehran “every last chance before decapitation.”

The Strait of Hormuz, the waterway critical to global energy supplies, remained shut, and the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen disrupted shipping in the Red Sea according to aljazeera. Trump earlier posted that any deal “would include the Immediate, Complete, and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT, and an end to Iran’s nuclear threat.” Iran denied his account of who requested a pause according to aljazeera.
