The S&P Global flash US composite purchasing managers index climbed to 56 in August, the highest reading since April 2022, according to bloomberg. Figures above 50 indicate expansion. Trump mentioned the source (see bloomberg). Activity at service providers rose to 56.8, matching the highest level since March 2022, while the manufacturing gauge fell to 53.2, a five-month low that stayed in expansionary territory.

“US business is booming, with firms reporting the fastest output growth for over four years,” Chris Williamson, chief business economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said in a statement, according to bloomberg. He said jobs growth showed a revival in August as employers gained confidence and concerns faded over the economic impact of tariffs and the conflict in the Middle East.

Businesses added workers at the fastest clip since January 2025, with hiring picking up at both manufacturers and service providers, according to bloomberg. Input costs expanded at the slowest pace since the start of the conflict in the Middle East, and a measure of future output climbed to a nine-month high. The conflict “remains a key area of concern for businesses, especially via the impact on supply lines and energy prices,” Williamson said.
