Trump names Ben Moss as White House Staff Secretary, elevating Scharf to Counsel
Trump says Ben Moss will become Assistant to the President and White House Staff Secretary on Sept. 2, replacing Will Scharf, who moves to White House Counsel.
WASHINGTON D.C. — Donald Trump named Ben Moss as the next White House Staff Secretary, filling the post as Will Scharf moves into the White House Counsel’s office.
Trump said Moss, the current Deputy White House Staff Secretary, will take the role effective September 2nd. Moss previously served as Policy Director to the Vice President and began his government service as General Counsel to JD Vance in the United States Senate. “He is a Patriot who loves our beautiful Country,” Trump wrote of Moss.

Moss, according to Trump’s post, clerked for a federal appeals court judge and worked as a lawyer in private practice before entering government. He was a top student at the University of Chicago Law School, Trump said. The post traced Moss’s path from Vance’s Senate office to the vice president’s policy shop and into the staff secretary’s office.
Scharf, who currently oversees administrative work as the staff secretary, is set to be the new White House counsel, taking over the senior West Wing position from David Warrington according to time. Scharf graduated from Harvard Law School in 2011 and has served as a federal prosecutor and a clerk for two federal judges according to time. He was Trump’s personal lawyer from 2023 to 2025, as Trump faced a series of criminal and civil cases between his two stints in the White House according to time.
Trump announced Sunday that Scharf, the staff secretary who as head of the National Capital Planning Commission helped secure approval for the $400 million ballroom project, would become White House counsel according to pbs. Scharf, beginning Sept. one, will replace Warrington, who is leaving the administration to join the private sector according to pbs. As White House staff secretary, Scharf was responsible for managing the papers that cross the president’s desk and stands at Trump’s side when the president signs executive orders according to audacy.
