WASHINGTON D.C. — Donald Trump amplified a Senate ethics complaint filed by Judicial Watch against Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, a Rhode Island Democrat, over alleged conflicts of interest tied to his wife’s consulting work.

The complaint accuses Whitehouse of using his official Senate position to benefit his spouse’s environmental clients, according to judicialwatch. Judicial Watch, a conservative watchdog group, argues that his sponsorship of ocean-related legislation created a reasonable appearance of a conflict of interest.

The senator’s wife, Sandra Thornton Whitehouse, is the president of Ocean Wonks, LLC, a for-profit environmental consulting company chartered in 2017 with its principal place of business in Rhode Island, according to judicialwatch. She became a consultant to nonprofit groups focused on environmental issues, including Ocean Conservancy and AltaSea, after her husband’s Senate election. Influence Watch found she made slightly over $2.6 million in total compensation from Ocean Conservancy since fiscal year 2009, a level that would rank her the eighth highest earner among the group’s employees.

The complaint lists five enacted laws that Judicial Watch says likely benefited the senator’s wife and her clients. The Save Our Seas Act, signed into law in 2018, and Save Our Seas 2.0 Act, signed in 2020, funded marine debris cleanup work supported by Ocean Conservancy. The group received the largest NOAA Marine Debris Program grant awarded in 2021, totaling $631,770, and the highest such grant in 2022, totaling $361,395, according to judicialwatch.

The complaint’s stakes fall on Whitehouse, who faces a call for a Senate investigation, and on Trump, who elevated the allegation to his followers. A decision on whether to open a formal investigation rests with the Senate Select Committee on Ethics. A date for any such decision has not been announced.
