Cruz, who represents 30 million Texans in the U.S. Senate, wrote a book that highlights Thomas’s rise from poverty and his move to the political right, according to National Public Radio. Cruz described Thomas as a left-wing radical during his college and law school years before he became one of the court’s most conservative voices, according to npr. Today Thomas is the court’s senior justice and among its most conservative members, according to npr.

The biography also draws attention to its author, who once argued cases before the Supreme Court, according to wunc. Cruz said he does not want to be a judge because a judge stays out of politics and policy fights, according to wunc. “I will never be a judge,” Cruz said in an interview about the book, according to wunc.

Cruz named four justices he called giants of his lifetime. “In our lifetimes, we have had four giants on the court – Clarence Thomas, Antonin Scalia, Sam Alito and my former boss, Chief Justice William Rehnquist,” Cruz said, according to National Public Radio. He described Thomas as the justice most willing to return to the original Constitution and overturn precedent, according to npr.

Cruz has written earlier books, including “A Time for Truth: Reigniting the Promise of America,” which details his journey as the son of a Cuban immigrant who grew up in Texas, according to Amazon®. He is also the author of “One Vote Away: How a Single Supreme Court Seat Can Change History,” a work that examines eight constitutional issues and landmark cases, according to amazon.
